Primtings by
Dekka Raymaker

In 1975 Andrew MacLachlan (a.k.a. Dekka Raymaker)
enrolled for a one-year art foundation course at
Malton Street Art College, Hull, a year later went
on to study a BAhons degree course in graphic
design at Newcastle Polytechnic. In 1991 Andrew
bought his first Mac II computer, and so intro-
ducing him to a new world, the World Wide Web.
In 2006 he became the studio manager for con-
temporary artists Tim Noble & Sue Webster.

In February 2007 discovering the virtual world
of Second Life (SL) his avatar Dekka Raymaker
was born. Dekka responded to a call for work by
Primtings Museum in May 2008 and presented a 3D
version of Vincent's Room by Van Gogh and since
added two further works. However, it wasn't until
August that year that Dekka made his own art in
SL when he discovered Brooklyn is Watching (BiW),
a hybrid Second/Real Life project with the Jack
the Pelican Presents gallery in Brooklyn, NY.
Dekka’s work has developed into presenting his
ideas in large format art installations, usually
being a critical comment on the shortfalls of SL
and its parent company Linden Lab, together with
an ongoing attempt to discover Dekka Raymaker’s
relationship with Andrew MacLachlan in the real
world.

• Skullduggery, Oct 2008
Inspired by the Philippe Halsman's photograph after a drawing by Dalí of a human skull consisting of seven naked women's bodies.

Arthole Gallery, Kress
• The Church of Whoami, Feb 2009
An extension and a tighter installation based on the theme set by 8 Platforms, about both the identity of the avatar/real life person and the interaction of Second Life/real life.

::: Soup :::, Eryri – Eryri (224, 187, 23)
• Prim Soup, May 2009
This installation is sim specific. My original intention was for the space to be church like, but after a visit to Kew gardens in England while creating the piece, I decided to make it a 'folly' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folly)

Odyssey, East of Odyssey – Odyssey (189, 189, 21)
• Psychotic Zoo, July 2009
Psychotic Zoo. A butterfly, an apple, a blade, sex, segregation and castration. Second Life is different things to all of us. Who controls who, are we the adults or are we the children?

At first I considered doing one of his vitrines with an animal suspended in formaldehyde, but thought that would just look like direct copy from real life into Second Life. Then in a review about the vitrines I read "seducing the viewer into the work visu (more)

I could have chosen any number of surrealist paintings for interpretation in SL, but this is one of my favorite ones, Son of Man, 1964 by René Magritte (1898–1967). I think many surrealists would have loved the concept of Second Life. Magritte was a B (more)
